The Fifth Course

 

Colored Gemstones is the final component of the ‘Career Gemmology’ program and consists of twenty-nine lessons that cover colored gemstone mining, cutting and grading plus twenty-six of the most important groups, species and varieties of gemstones found in the gem and jewelry industry including: Corundum (ruby and sapphire), beryl (emerald, aquamarine and other beryls), chrysoberyl (alexandrite and cat’s eye chrysoberyl), spinel, zircon, topaz, tourmaline, peridot, quartz (amethyst, citrine, rose quartz and the various chalcedonies and agates), garnet, tanzanite, lapis lazuli, turquoise, opal (black, white, boulder and fire opal), jade (jadeite and nephrite), spodumene (kunzite and hiddenite), feldspar (moonstone and sunstone), iolite, andalusite, diopside, apatite, coral, jet, amber, ivory, and pearls.

These individual gemstone lessons cover a comprehensive range of topics including physical and optical properties, geological formation, localities, crystal system, chemical composition and varieties, cause of color, absorption spectra, common inclusions, pleochroism, fluorescence, synthesis and treatment methods, how to care for them and in certain lessons, comparative pricing charts.
