BASIC GEMOLOGY
The First Course
Basic Gemology consists of ten lessons and covers the
origin and chemical nature of gemstones, their physical and
optical properties, magnetism, basic crystallography, the
absorption of light, refraction, and reflection, polarized light,
pleochroism, specific gravity, luminescence, magnification,
classification and types of inclusions, and thermal
conductivity.
You will also learn about the various instruments used to
identify gemstones and the scientific principles they are
based upon including the spectroscope, the refractometer, the
polariscope, the dichroscope, hydrostatic testing and specific
gravity liquids, ultraviolet light, X-rays, the hand loupe, the
microscope, the reflectivity meter, and the various diamond
and moissanite testers.
At the end of each lesson, you will find a lesson review that covers the main topics discussed
in the lesson. These will help you prepare for the two ‘open book’ tests that are included in
this component after lessons five and ten
