The Second Course
Advanced Gemology consists of twenty-two lessons and covers imitation gemstones, composite assembled stones, the techniques used to synthesize gemstones (Verneuil flame fusion, Czochralski pulling method, flux melt, hydrothermal, skull crucible, horizontally oriented crystallization, zone melt, high pressure, high temperature, chemical vapor deposition, detonation, ultrasonic cavitation, sublimation and the modified Stöber method, the synthesis of jadeite, lapis lazuli, turquoise, malachite, coral and some of the lesser known gemstones (strontium titanate, yttrium aluminum garnet, gadolinium gallium garnet and rutile), treatments and enhancements (heat treatment, diffusion, irradiation, fracture filling, HPHT and surface modifications), and advanced gem testing techniques. You will also learn how to detect these gemstones.
